Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
