Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
