European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
