Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
